Designing packaging and POS to drive sales

 

The Brand

Kryptonite is a US brand operating internationally, throughout the US and Europe. The company set the standard for bike security when it launched one of the world’s first bike locks in 1972 in New York City. Today Kryptonite continues to innovate and empower its customers to protect what they value.

Kryptonite was looking for an engaging point-of-sale (POS) solution to launch new product Click Lock. They needed the packaging to appeal to the end-consumer and entice them to make a spontaneous purchase at the point of sale.

Why Awesomesauce?

Kryptonite’s Marketing Manager had worked with members of the Awesomesauce team before and used Awesomesauce’s services on a variety of projects from graphic design and branding to packaging and translations, so he knew we were up for the challenge.

Adding Some Sauce

Kryptonite approached us with the challenge to come up with a consumer-facing POS solution for their new product, Click Lock. There were a number of considerations for us to take on board when developing initial creative concepts – Click Lock needed to be positioned as an impulse product which could be displayed on a point-of-sale countertop, as well as on a hanging display.

The design had to reflect the brand’s premium status and communicate the product’s purpose as a quick and easy solution for short term security requirements (think securing your bike while you pop into the local shop).

As a business, Kryptonite is passionate about sustainability and has an ambitious Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, so this was also an important consideration. A key part of the business’ ESG strategy is reducing waste to landfill.

Through previous projects, we were familiar with the Kryptonite brand and able to hit the ground running, to quickly present initial concepts to the team. The chosen concept was designed to appeal to consumers and attract attention while conveying the brand and product’s USPs.

The packaging we created provides a dual-purpose solution that enables it to be displayed at the point of sale or turned up the other way and hung on display. Conscious of the company’s ESG policies, we also ensured the solution reduces waste through doubling up as packaging for transportation through a tear off lid mechanism.

Awesome Results from Packaging Design

Our design solution covered all the objectives set by the client – the dual-purpose packaging supports retailers with displaying the product as required and increases the chances of sales with the POS option, while the packaging’s striking design stands out to consumers at the point of sale to increase the chances of an impulse purchase.

The packaging doubles up as packaging for transportation which reduces waste and therefore underlines the company’s commitment to its ESG policy, as well as the brand’s positioning as industry leaders.

The product is stocked in stores throughout the US and Europe, underlining Kryptonite’s commitment to innovation.
