Let’s dip in
This is getting beyond a joke now.
Thousands of choices on the market and I get lumbered with tasting another hot sauce?
Give me some Henderson’s! I’d relish a glug of that. Apple? Why not? Cranberry? Easy. Salad cream? Not my favourite but I’d go for it. Hell, I’d even swig soy straight from the bottle.
But no. Tastebud torture seems to be my new pastime.
Why don’t I just swill my mouth with white spirit and throw in a match?
I could quite easily bury a burrito in it.
It’s all in the taste
Starting with the design, it looks authentic. Plenty of Mexican associated colour dashed with a portrait of Cholula? Not my cup of tea, but it clearly stays true to its roots.
With about as much enthusiasm as a Monday morning, I unscrew the top and take a whiff. It smells like every other hot sauce I’ve had the displeasure of tasting.
Time to get it done. Here goes nothing.
Ooh. It’s not that spicy at all. In fact, it’s actually very nice. There’s a balance of flavours beyond the mild heat; it’s tangy, smoky, and salty. I could quite easily bury a burrito in it. Child-friendly heat packed with plenty of palate pleasing flavour. Winner.
Team verdict
My sauce connoisseur comrades start with the design and agree with my verdict; it’s nice but a bit boring and although authentic, maybe slightly outdated? Average scores in this area.
Next comes the tasting, Mark, like me, is a big fan. James on the other hand with his palate evolved from decades of loving spice is not much of a lover of Cholula. He doesn’t seem to get the same array of taste that Mark and I did. He brings the score down.
Is it an AWESOMESAUCE?
Despite the lacklustre review from James. I’ve decided to award Cholula with an imaginary yet coveted awesomesauce badge. Sure, we weren’t big lovers of the design, but the taste was great, and the heat was just at the top end of mild.
