Heinz Tomato Ketchup

Let’s dip in

Without quizzing my parents, I am pretty sure that as a child, ketchup was my door into the world of condiments, becoming my first dipping sauce for many a fried and beige food type (those great 90s dishes) before I discovered the joys of BBQ and mayonnaise. I used to love it.

However.

Before we delve into my taste review of the most recognisable sauce on Earth, I must forewarn you of a slight aversion I have developed toward it.

It all started just a few years back when my nephew very suddenly became a HUGE tomato sauce fan.

How can that be an issue you ask? Well, it wasn’t…at first.

BUT it very quickly became too much. Every meal of his accompanied by a bowl full (and that is no exaggeration) of tomato ketchup. His food literally slobbering with the thick red drool and my stomach turning as I mouthed ‘why is he doing this?’ to my sister, his mum.

For this reason, I no longer like tomato ketchup.

It is, of course very tomatoey but there is also quite a balanced flavour, it’s tangy but not sharp, with a slight sweet finish.

It’s all in the taste

Technically, I could just type ‘tomatoey’ here but where is the fun in that?

While no longer a fan, I managed to get it together to give it another taste.

It is, of course very tomatoey but there is also quite a balanced flavour, it’s tangy but not sharp, with a slight sweet finish.

Team verdict

To balance out my current negative opinion of ketchup, I’ve enlisted the help of my colleagues, James, and Mark.

Starting with branding, the glass bottle and label featuring a simple sprig and bulbous tomato are instantly recognisable and slightly nostalgic. It’s an obvious top score for this sauce, with everyone in agreement.

The taste is next and both nod in appreciation. We all know the flavour and it’s nothing new but both tasters are fans of the red sauce.

Is it the AWESOMESAUCE?

I guess I have to say yes here; I am outnumbered in my opinion. Tomato ketchup is a global institution in the saucing world and provides the perfect pairing to a number of dishes. Lastly, (and with slight reluctance), the team agrees that ketchup does contain awesomesauce.
