Let’s dip in
Let’s start with the bottle. There’s a lot going on with it.
The label branding is striking; enveloped in the colours of the prominent 1930s Rasta movement and completed with a sketched silhouette of its founder, Levi Roots (whose real name is disappointingly, Keith).
I have a vague recollection of this sauce being featured on Dragon’s Den some years back, (confirmed after a quick google), featuring a jolly chap playing his guitar, singing about his product and how ‘it’s so nice [he] had to name it twice.’
Anyhow.
Keith did well.
A couple of Dragons invested and a few years later, it graces the shelves of most supermarkets.
It has a rustic, homemade feel, which is authentic and true to its backstory and roots.
It’s all in the taste
I am sure I have tried this at some point. But I cannot recall my opinion. Maybe it wasn’t memorable? Or too spicy? Maybe it was so hot that the memory of it has been pushed to the recesses of my sub-conscious?
I quiver with fear slightly.
My recent tasting of Nando’s XX Hot Peri Peri Sauce left a mark. A spice-induced scorch mark on my soul.
Get a grip Luke.
A deep breath and I dip a spoon in, take a quick whiff of the thick brown goo and swallow it down…
AND…
It’s HP Brown sauce?
Actually, it’s so much more.
It’s got some heat, sure, but it’s not unbearable; the flavour is garlicky and smoky.
I quite like it.
Reggae Reggae is good.
Team verdict
Enlisting the help of my trusted sauce-tasting sidekicks, James, and Mark – we begin with the label and look.
It’s great; it has plenty of colour, a catchy product name and displays clear links to its Rasta-influenced heritage. Artwork Director, Mark said, “it has a rustic, homemade feel, which is authentic and true to its backstory and roots.” The branding is vibrant, colourful and will clearly grab the attention of any browsing condiment customer. Top scores from all.
Next comes the tasting.
It’s a clear winner in this category too. Both tuck in for seconds and before they can reach for thirds, I swiftly swipe the bottle away from them.
Hold fire lads, I plan to marinade some poultry in this later. Keep your mitts off.
Top scores all round for tasting too.
Is it the AWESOMSAUCE?
A resounding YES. The sauce contains a mixture of flavours, the branding looks great and most importantly (for me at least) it doesn’t blow my head off with unnecessary heat.
Reggae Reggae contains the AWESOMESAUCE.
